Introduction Quitting smoking is possibly the most difficult addiction to overcome and, yes, it IS an addiction. Many people who have quit drinking and then quit smoking at a later time have said it was more difficult to quit smoking. Of course, if you have tried to quit smoking, then you already know all of this. What you do not know, is how to really do it, how to “kick the habit”, otherwise you would be reading a the newspaper or your favorite mystery or watching the game on television. Smokers are certainly looked upon as doing nothing more than supporting a filthy habit. They are literally being pushed out into the street as smoking by-laws continue to pop up everywhere. Of course, it is true that second hand smoke is incredibly dangerous and no one should be exposed to it if they do not wish to be. The major problem is that many people have the opinion that smokers should have better control or they should be able to quit if they want to. Have you ever seen a pregnant woman smoking? The instinct of a mother is surpassed by nothing – except, in some cases, addiction. While many manage to quit for the sake of their child, many cannot. Smokers are not bad – they are people with an illness. That’s what addiction is – an illness. Of course, all of the education around smoking has decreased the number of people who are smoking now in relation to 10, 20, and even 30 years ago. Is there any way to guarantee that you will quit smoking and never return to it? Unfortunately the answer is no because smoking is an addiction with not only a physical, but also a psychological grounding. All you can do is not smoke for the present day. This book is dedicated to examining the “How To” aspect of quitting smoking. However, it also discusses smoking itself, smoking statistics, addiction, and why people smoke. In these pages, you will learn about the quit smoking quick schemes and what to avoid, the conventional and non-conventional methods of quitting, and about the all-important support system that exists to help you every step of the way. You will also learn the background information that is not intended to bore you or make you say, “I don’t care about this. I just want to quit.” This extra information is presented in order that you may see what the root of the smoking addiction truly is and that it may help you to see why fads don’t work and why a holistic approach to quitting is necessary for success. It is our wish that, by the time you finish reading this book, that you will feel ready to face the challenge and that you will feel more confident than ever that you can do it.
